2016 Olympic Gold Medal Match Controversy 

Competing at the bantamweight division, Shakur Stevenson fought in the gold medal match against Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez at the 2016 Olympics. 

Stevenson lost the fight 2-1 on a split decision, with two judges giving Ramirez the edge. The American boxer looked sharp overall, as per various experts, but Ramirez’s winning the fight questions the credibility of the judges. 

After losing the fight, Stevenson went emotional and cried. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts, and crosses favoured the American boxer.

Amateur Boxing Career 

Shakur Stevenson started to learn boxing at the young age of five. At 13, in 2011, he made his amateur boxing debut. 

He fought 140 times, winning 127 games and losing 13. 2013 and 2014 were the standout years in his amateur boxing career. He finished it by winning silver at the 2016 Olympics. 

From an early age, he was known for his speed, footwork and elite boxing brain.

Shakur Stevenson turned professional on 22 April 2017 at Stubhub Center in Carson, California. He beat Edgar Brito in a fight that went full six rounds. 

As a professional boxer, he stands unbeaten with 23 wins in 23 fights. It includes 11 victories by knockout. The American pugilist is a three-weight world champion and the current WBC lightweight champion. 

He held the WBO flyweight and super-flyweight titles previously. He started his career under the Top Rank banner, as they signed him in February 2017. 

In his 13th pro fight, he won the WBO featherweight title and defeated Joet Gonzalez in a 12-round unanimous decision win on 26 October 2019 at Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada

On 21 October 2021, he beat Jamel Herring and became the two-division world champion. The fight was for the WBO super featherweight title at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. 

He then unified the division by beating Oscar Valdez for the WBC belt and also won the vacant The Ring super featherweight title on 30 April 2022. 

He had the chance to win the WBA belt too, but missing the weight against Robson Conceiacao lost him the chance back in September 2023. 

On 16 November 2023, he beat Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight title at T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. 

Defending his title, he beat Artem Harutyunyan in April 2024 and Josh Padley in February 2025.
