Early days in Boxing

Ben Davison had an amateur boxing career, but it did not work well for him. Then he moved towards semi-professional football, playing for Stevenage FC.

But having a close relationship with Billy Joe Saunders helped him to enter the boxing world as a trainer.

In 2017, he started with notable British boxers Tom Little, Ashley Sexton, and Michael Maguire. It was the time when Saunders made Ben meet boxing great Tyson Fury.

The Gypsy King then wanted to lose weight to come back in shape, which seemd a very hard task. But Davison gave him a full-time position as a trainer, with Fury making a comeback against Sefer Seferi on 9 June 2018. In between, he was also training Billy Joe.

Rise with Tyson Fury

Davison and Fury stayed together from Seferi to Otto Wallin’s fight.

  • Fury had a tune-up fight against Seferi and then Francesco Pianeta on 18 August 2018. Fury won both contests.
  • The heavyweight great then had a mega fight for the WBC title on 1 December 2018 with Deontay Wilder. The judges called the 12-round battle a draw, but most of the boxing fans and pundits felt that Fury was robbed despite going down twice. Davison was hailed by boxing lovers for making Fury look skilled.
  • Fury then beat Tom Schwarz in the second round on 15 June 2019 via TKO.
  • Davison’s last fight as Fury’s trainer came against Otto Wallin on 19 September 2019. Fury won the contest, but he did not look that solid. As a result, in December, ahead of the Deontay Wilder rematch, Fury and Davison parted ways.

Making a Stable of Boxing

In 2020, Ben Davison teamed up with Josh Taylor. In September 2020, Taylor beat Apinun Khongsong. And in May 2021, Davison led Taylor to beat Jose Ramirez, who became the undisputed welterweight champion.

Taylor then had an off day against Jack Catterall in February 2022. He won the fight officially, with many boxing fans felt Catterall was robbed. This made them part ways. It also made the British boxing trainer part ways with Lee McGregor.

Earning Respect

Despite Davison leading Fury and Taylor to glory, he was being trolled as a PT Teacher by boxing fans on social media. He was even called a defensive trainer.

Leigh Wood, who was known as an average boxer, teamed up with Davison in 2021. He looked good in the Feb 2021 fight against Reece Mould, winning via 9th round TKO for the British featherweight title.

But the major change came when Wood beat Xu Can via a 12-round TKO in July 2021 and became the WBA (Regular) featherweight champion.

This made many feel that Davison has something special that makes basic fighters look good.

Wood then went against the odds to beat Michael Conlan, Mauricio Lara and Josh Warrington. He lost to Mauricio Lara and Anthony Cacace on the way, but in 2021, it did not look as if Wood might go down as a boxing great in Britain.
