Arrival In Boxing Reporting
Kugan Cassius started IFL TV in 2010. Three years later, he got the official trademark. He started it off with co-founder James Helder.
At first, they were reviewing movies and TV shows before going full in the boxing world. He started at the same time Eddie Hearn began his journey, more or less, as a boxing promoter.
Eddie, being a young promoter then, knew the impact of social media on boxing coverage. He started to give him direct access to his personal life, back-room controversies and beyond. Eddie made his channel one of the first ones on YouTube to cover boxing.
Getting inspiration from Kugan, Michelle Joy Phelps, and Radio Rahim also started to cover boxing on their YouTube and other social media platforms.
With the arrival of Eddie, boxing became red hot in the United Kingdom again in the 2010s, helping Kugan to become a household boxing name in the United States, too.
From Tyson Fury to Mike Tyson, he has taken the interviews of every small to big name in the boxing world.
By 2014, and moving forward, his YouTube channel had reached the level where every boxing event requires IFL to cover the event.
Deal With MKT
In 2017, Kugan Cassius signed a promotional deal with MTK Global (Macklin’s Gym Marbella). In 2012, MKT was founded by boxer Matthew Macklin and Daniel Kinahan.
MKT started to manage top boxers like Tyson Fury, Billy Joe Saunders and others. From having small-scale boxing events to global boxing appearances, Irish drug lord and criminal Kinahan started to get a grip on the game from behind closed doors.
MKT used IFL’s YouTube reach to broadcast their fights from 2017 to 2022 a lot. Even when the media were questioning Kinahan’s involvement in boxing, Kugan’s IFL tried to do a whitewash of his brand. They called him a person who was doing great for boxing.
However, in February 2021, BBC made a detailed documentary about the ‘Kinahan Cartel’. This exposed Kugan and several boxing fighters, managers, pundits and trainers.
Hence, since 2022, he has been banned from going to the United States as the government officials have put a price worth millions to reveal the location of Kinahan.
As Kugan’s channel tried to clear his image, he faced a lot of backlash.
He travels to cover boxing in Ireland, Saudi, UAE and other parts of the world, but not to the US since 2022.
A Bit Downfall
Kugan Cassius’ YouTube channel started to see a bit downfall due to the following reasons:
- Kugan’s potential US ban prevented him and his 2022 team to not visiting the US. This made IFL TV make a deal with newcomers (reporters). Hence, other outlets tried to make a mark.
- In October 2022, Benn’s failed drug test saw IFL’s Umar doing a lot of criticism, which promoter Hearn did not like. This made him go closer to Charlie Parsons.
- The rise Parsons meant Eddie gave him the exclusive interviews with Kugan, who did enjoy exclusivity from 2012 to 2022.
- In 2024, Umar (Kugan’s right-hand) left IFL TV and joined BoxNation.
- In 2025, due to a lot of YouTube channels covering boxing, the overall views have come down. But still, they are doing better than others.
- Having MKT allowed IFL to cover good boxing events, which is the not anymore.
