On Friday evening in New York, Rolly Romero shocked the fight fans worldwide with a victory over social media sensation and high-profile boxer Ryan Garcia.
Rolly won the fight 115-112, 115-112, 118-109 to win the WBA (Regular) welterweight title.
Before the main event at Times Square, every boxing pundit and fight fan predicted the fight would end with a knockout before six rounds.
And most of them went with Garcia, knocking Romero out.
Before facing Garcia, Romero had lost twice in his professional career. The first defeat came against Gervonta Davis via a six-round technical knockout on May 28, 2022. This second career defeat came, losing to Isaac Cruz in a ninth-round TKO on Mar 30, 2024.
Both Cruz and Davis are being seen as top boxers; many did predict Garcia winning the fight with ease. Last year, versus Devin Haney, Garcia looked amazing. However, the fight was shifted to a no-contest after the 26-year-old fighter failed the drug test.
So it was a year-plus off from the boxing ring, as the fight against Devin Haney happened on 20 April 2024.
Unlike previous years, Garcia looked fit and took care of his body well.
But Romero did present his boxing skills, too, becoming the first and only fighter since Gervonta Davis in April 2023 to beat ‘King Ryan’.
Romero did score a knockdown in the second round and shocked the boxing world in style. It did make Garcia respect his power, with Romero slowing the fight, which made Garcia unable to counterattack.
The fight went to 12 rounds, which was not predicted as both fighters like to score a knockout.
Five to seven years ago, boxing insiders rated Rolly highly. However, defeats to Davis and Cruz did impact his growth overall.
But a victory over Garcia has made his claims real that he is a top-level pugilist.
Before Garcia vs Romero, Devin Haney defeated Jose Ramírez 118-110, 119-109, and 119-109.
Meanwhile, in the first of the mega three fights, Teofimo Lopez outdid Arnold Barboza Jr. 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110. Lopez defended his WBO junior welterweight title in style.
Garcia’s loss has put the rematch against Haney under the carpet for now. Matchroom Boxing did upload official highlights of the main event.
