Prince Naseem Early Life, Parents, Siblings

Price Naseem comes from a Yemeni immigrant family. He lived in Sheffield within the Yemeni immigrant community. From the early days of his life, Naseem seemed a naturally gifted athlete. Price Naseem’s parents worked hard to make sure that the Hamed family could have a decent lifestyle.

His father, Sal Hamed, took him to the boxing gym called Wincobank Gym in Sheffield. Brendan Ingle, who is a legendary boxing trainer, saw a future world champion in Naseem.

Salma Hamed is the name of Naseem’s mother. Both of Naseem’s parents are of Yemeni heritage.

He grew up with eight siblings. Out of which, Riath Hamed, Nabeel Hamed and Murad Hamed are three of his publicly known siblings.

Naseem’s Wife and Children

Elemara Hamed married Prince Naseem way before he became the world champion in boxing. They have been living a lovely life ever since, with Elemara loving to stay away from the limelight.

They are the parents of Sami Hamed, Aadam Hamed and Nabeel Hamed. Aadam is the most famous child of Naseem, as he is a professional boxer.

Naseem Education and Early Boxing Glory

Prince Naseem attended local schools in Wincobank. His boxing skills made him take the sport seriously by the age of 7. Naseem decided to pursue the sporting route rather than getting a formal education.

Hence, he did not get a higher education. As he joined the Wincobank Gym, which is now known as the Ingle Boxing Gym, trainer Brendan Ingle paid the highest level of attention to polish the skills of this naturally gifted boxer.

By 12 to 14 years old, Prince started to dominate junior boxing tournaments and made a strong presence. The boxing pundits were saying back then that ‘ spar with Naseem, only if you are ready’.

Amateur Boxing Career of Prince Naseem

Prince Naseem had just 22 recorded amateur boxing fights, but his training started from the young age of 10. Hence, he was not short of boxing training before turning professional in early 1992 (18 years old).

Naseem won 21 of his 22 amateur boxing fights, losing just once.

Even back then, Prince Naseem was known for his flashy footwork, knockout power and elite boxing IQ.

Professional Career Timeline

  • Prince Naseem turned professional on 14 February 1992 at the Leisure Centre in Mansfield, England. He defeated Ricky Beard by a second-round KO.
  • Peter Buckley, who was Naseem’s sixth opponent as a pro boxer, took him to the wire as both had a great battle for all six rounds. It was Naseem’s first points victory (November 1992).
  • But two years later, in 1994, Naseem had a rematch against Peter Buckley. It was a fourth-round TKO victory.
  • In May 2024, The Naz outboxed Vincenzo Belcastro (12-round UD) and won the European bantamweight title. It was his first reknocked title as a professional.
  • On 30 September 1995, an 8th-round TKO victory over Steve Robinson made Prince Naseem the WBO featherweight champion.
  • He then defended the title against Said Lawal, Daniel Alicea, Manuel Medina and Remigio Molina before defeating Tom Johnson to unify the featherweight title with the IBF addition.
  • Against Billy Hardy and Juan Gerardo Cabrera, he defended IBF and WBO featherweight titles. He has to vacate the IBF title.
  • He kept on defending the WBO title versus Jose Badillo, Kevin Kelley, Wilfredo Vazquez, Wayne McCullough and Paul Ingle before moving to win the WBC featherweight title against Cesar Soto.
  • Naseem moved on to beat Vuyani Bungu and Augie Sanchez to turn 35 and 0.
  • On 1 April 2007, Marco Antonio Barrera outdid Naseem in a 12-round battle. He was not able to take the defeat. And it was the end of his professional career.
  • He did fight once after losing to Marco and defeated Manuel Calvo. But the overall boxing behaviour of Naseem did not help him make a comeback.

Several boxing fans felt that leaving trainer Brendan Ingle and joining hands with Manuel Steward, and then Oscar Suarez, did not help Naseem to stay professional.

Even leaving Frank Warren as the boxing promoter to make a shift with Kellie Maloney and then Lou DiBella served the best outlook for him.

By the latter part of his career, he became unprofessional. It, hence, led him to lose to Marco Antonio Barrera. It led him to retire at the young age of 28.
