Laila Ali set her aim to become a boxer at the age of 18. It was a surprise to her father to see a female thinking about making a pro career in boxing in the 2000s. Laila had a short-lived amateur career before turning professional on 8 October 1999 in New York as she beat April Fowler by a 1st-round knockout.
She remained unbeaten as a pro boxer with an impressive record of 24 wins in 24 fights, where 21 victories came by KO/TKO. She remained active until early 2007.
Her final boxing match happened on 3 February 2007 as she defeated Gwendolyn O’Neil. She retired as a two-decision champion, legend and pioneer (female pro boxing).
Out of all her pro fights, it was the head-to-head battle against Jacqui Frazier-Lyde in June 2021 that attracted limelight towards the female boxing back then the most. Her father Ali and Joe Frazier had legendary boxing battles during their time. In 2001, Ali and Frazier kids fighting stole the show.
