Devin Haney, for the first time since facing an adversary against Ryan Garcia on 20 April 2024, came back to the boxing ring at a historic fight at Times Square in New York on Friday to beat veteran Jose Ramirez 118-110, 119-109, and 119-109.
As the fight vs Garcia was shifted to a no-contest, following a failed drug test, Haney won his 32nd professional fight and kept his unbeaten record alive.
For Ramirez, it was his second straight and third overall career defeat. On Nov 16, 2024, Ramirez lost in a 10-round unanimous decision to Arnold Barboza Jr.
His first defeat came against Josh Taylor on 22 May 2021 for the undisputed light welterweight title, having won 29 of his 32 fights.
Despite Haney winning the fight with a huge margin, many fans felt that it was a boring performance. In Haney’s professional career, several fight fans do not like his defensive approach.
Haney was hoping to see Garcia win the fight against Rolando Rolly Romero, but the result went the other way, setting up the rematch.
Romero beat Garcia in a 12-round battle, with all three judges scoring in his favour at the main event.
