For Anthony Cacace, 2024 was the year he showed his class. Similarly he has carried the same form for 2025, beating well-respected Leigh Wood in the ninth round out of a scheduled 12 at Nottingham Arena in Nottingham on Saturday.
Cacace defeated Joe Cordina and Josh Warrington in 2024 to make his name popular in the boxing world. Winning the IBO super-featherweight title, Cacace looked too strong against Leigh Wood as the English boxer was not able to take the combination punches of the Northern Irish star.
Wood, 36, came stronger by the end of the eighth round as he had lost most of the rounds before. The former WBA featherweight champion tried to go for the knockout in the ninth round.
It turned against Wood, who did face a knockdown first before getting fully unconscious. Hence, Ben Davison threw the towel and stopped the fight in the ninth round.
Cacace became the fourth professional fighter to beat Leigh Wood in professional ranks. The 36-year-old fighter had lost to Gavin McDonnell, Jazza Dickens and Mauricio Lara before the fight against Cacace. It was his 24th professional victory in 25 contests.
Cacace’s only pro-rank defeat came against Martin Joseph Ward on 15 July 2017. Cacace’s consecutive victory over three good fighters; Cordina, Warrington and Wood, has made him one of the top pugilists in Europe.
Meanwhile, Wood’s record now stands four defeats to 28 wins in 32 fights.
